If you’re a Google user, there’s a good chance you’ve used the company’s email service to sign out of your accounts. Gmail is one of the most popular email services on the web, and it’s easy to sign out of your account if you use the following steps:
- Open Gmail and click on the three lines in the top left corner of the screen. This will take you to a menu where you can select “Sign Out.”
- In the “Sign Out” dialog, enter your name and password (if any) and click on “Sign Out.”
- If you’ve used Google Authenticator to sign out of your accounts before, your account will be automatically signed out and closed when you finish this step. If not, please follow these instructions to set up Google Authenticator:
- Open Google Authenticator and create an account if it hasn’t already done so. You can use this same account to sign out of both Gmail and YouTube accounts. If using YouTube, make sure that your computer is connected to an internet connection so that YouTube can recognize your authenticator code when signing in from outside of Google Earth or other websites that require authentication (like Netflix). If using Gmail, make sure that your computer is connected to an internet connection so that messages sent through Gmail can be read by other computers on your network (like a work computer). 2. Click on the three lines in the top left corner of the screen next to “Sign Out.” This will take you to a menu where you can select “Create New Account.” 3. In the “Create New Account” dialog, enter your name and password (if any) and click on “Create Account.” 4. Your new account will be created with both an email address and a password for future use; however, if you ever want to log out of either account or change your password, just log into either account using their new login information and then re-
Many people have multiple Google accounts for Gmail and other purposes. Annoyingly, Google makes it very difficult to sign out of only one account at a time. It is possible if you know where to look.
When you’re signed into multiple Google accounts, the option you’ll see from the accounts menu is “Sign Out of All Accounts.” This is really frustrating. Why should you only be able to sign out of all accounts or none? We’ll show you how to do it.
This process works the same from google.com on the desktop and mobile browsers. Navigate to the website and select your profile icon in the top-right corner.
Make sure you’re using the account you want to sign out of and select “Manage Your Google Account.”
Next, head over to the “Security” section of the account settings and select “Manage Devices” under “Your Devices.”
Now click the three-dot icon for the device you want to sign out from and select “Sign Out.” You’ll notice there’s no three-dot icon for the device you’re currently using.
Confirm that you want to “Sign Out.”
That’s it! You can see how this is not a perfect fix. Essentially, you always will need to be signed into the account on one of your devices. One trick to get around this is to sign in to the account from incognito mode on a separate device. It’s a strange solution, but if you want to avoid signing out of multiple accounts at once, it works.
